General Discussion - Spam Box - Blowing Up SIMM Starships is Bleeping Awesome!

I was recently informed by a member of Bravo Fleet that he is no longer allowed to "Blow up starships".

Naturally, I was concerned about the person's sanity, as "Starship Blowup Withdrawal" could become a serious health condition if not treated with random starship destruction.

I wish to put this question to the public: Is blowing up simm starships a good or bad thing?

I've never actually been on a sim where the ship was destroyed in all my years heh. From an OOC standpoint, coming into games where the ship had recently been destroyed once or twice, I did see that it would sometimes cause players to vanish. There's a lot of fans out that there that want that experience of playing on a Defiant or Intrepid Class, etc.!

What you say does make sense... But I feel like there is a 'fun' factor which is being surgically removed by not allowing people to blow up starships.

Also, what about enemy ships? Or allied ships? Or "I read about the Reliant scenario" ships?

I think its a bad idea unless its agreed ship is all back together as if nothing happened after awhile.

Certainly there can be some issues with fleets limiting a sim's creativity at times. I don't say that to badmouth any fleet of course, as I play in a couple of different ones myself, but I do appreciate the vast flexibility I have with my own independant ship. So long as it makes sense to the story, in a way that will keep people engaged and enjoying their time on the game, I don't see why it should be so limited.

And of course, blowing up enemy ships is lots of fun for us writers. Sure, we play what are supposed to often be peaceful explorers, but push Starfleet too far and you better watch out!

But... blowing up sim starships can be so fun.

Several years ago, I was on a starbase simulation where one of our running jokes was how often we'd blown up the support ship and replaced it with a ship of the same class and name, with no letters after its registry code. The explanation in game was to convince the enemy that they couldn't kill the ship. Our reasoning OOC? "THAT WAS FUN DO IT AGAIN!!!!"

Wow. It's kinda like the DS9 Runabout scenario, except with bigger ships.

Sweet.

lol, exactly.

We even had in-character jokes about it.

Like, "Damnit you lost your ship?! AGAIN?!"

Meh.

That's why you have industrial-sized replicators. Push a button and out pops a starship!

For a while it was the XO (me) poking fun at the CO for losing so many ships.

And then the XO lost one.
