A 'Slow Computer' merely refers to a computer where the cycle speed fails to met a certain threshold within the game's requirements to run the entire game's animations. Sierra games, such as Space Quest III, will perform a cycles check to see if your system is fast enough to handle in-game animations. If it fails the check, certain in-game details will be disabled to preserve processing power. When the game boots up, a global is set in the game to set a counters based on the number of cycles the computer can handle.
Global 123 is set to a certain value. If this value is set to:
0 - 30, global124 is set to 0. This disables animations across the game to improve performance.
31-60, global124 is set to 1. This enables animations.
61+, global124 is set to 2.
The game does not appear to look for global124 being set to 2; only for 1.
DosBox tests have shown:
840 cycles gives you 30
882 cycles gives you 31
